It’s all true! Former STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate has replaced UFC’s No.1 contender Cat Zingano on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, which is still on pace to premiere September 4, 2013 on the new FOX Sports 1.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Zingano underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus on her right knee, forcing her to pull out of the coaching gig. Additionally, reports are also saying that UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey was unaware that Zingano had been replaced by Tate on the first day of the shoot for TUF 18. When Rousey saw Tate on the set she stormed off thinking she was replaced.
Afterwards, Rousey confirmed that this is what they wanted all along, and that the fight between her and Tate will go down in history as one of those things that really cemented women’s MMA.
“This is what we really wanted all along,” Rousey told Yahoo! Sports. “Everyone said an Ultimate Fighter between me and Miesha would be the best. We have a personal history with each other and this is a personal show. For some reason, I me and Miesha are intertwined in fate like Ali and Frazier or something like that.”
“I think people will look back at this as one of monumental rivalries and look back at this as one of those things that really cemented women’s MMA.”
Tate lost to Zingano at the finale of TUF 17 via TKO, and she was clearly pissed off in the post-fight presser by the referee call. However, this new event change should brighten up her days again.
