All Pantera fans want a reunion. However, all Pantera fans know how deep the animosity between Phil Anselmo (former Pantera vocalist) and Vinnie Paul (former Panter drummer) runs. Still, fans always hope for something, anything. Fans have even gone so far to select a fill-in guitarist for the late Dimebag Darrell, who was shot on stage in 2004; Dimebag is also Vinnie’s brother, who in some way or another might partially blame Phil for his brother’s death. Oh, that replacement guitarist that fans feel can adequately step in is Zakk Wylde, of Black Label Society and formerly Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime guitarist.
So, to the title of this article: Why am I raising the Pantera reunion flag? I’m doing so because of recent statements made by Phil Anselmo in an interview with Fuse News. (The video is embedded below.) In the interview, Phil talks about how angry and personal his new project, Phil H. Anselmo & the Illegals, is. It’s the angriest he’s been on record that I’ve heard in a long time and no doubt some of that anger stems from the loss of his friend and subsequent ostracization from his former bandmates. Phil goes on to say:
For me, really, I think it would mean a lot for Rex and Vince and myself to sit down and, I guess, bury the hatchet where we can be on more friendly terms. And, you know, I think it would mean a lot to the fans.
Phil concludes by saying that without Vince there’s no “Pantera reunion at all,” but that the skin basher knows that Phil’s door is open. However, he’s sadly realistic in saying that “he’s waiting [for Vince to call], but [he’s] not holding [his] breath.”
What do you think? Should the hatchet be buried and a Pantera reunion be made real? Please post your comments below.
