Based on all the hype and positive reviews for GTA V, it became evident from the start that this franchise installment would sell very well. And it has sold well thus far. So well, in fact, that GTA V generated $300 million more than Call of Duty: Black Ops II did, which made $500 million in 24 hours last year. That’s an annihilation in my book, and a record-breaker for Take-Two Interactive: GTA V is now the highest-generating game for them in a single day, including for the series. However, we still don’t know how many copies have been sold.
Grand Theft Auto IV launched in 2008, it sold 3.8 million copies and generated $310 million to give you some perspective. Take-Two is very impressed with the initial response of the game and CEO Strauss Zelnick released the following statement:
All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation, and excellence.
GTA V launched on September 17, 2013, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A multiplayer add-on will be available for free on October 1, 2013.
