On October 8th, Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday stated:
Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won! I’m also doubly proud as a Dundonian to welcome this home-grown series back into the Guinness World Records book.
Personally, I don’t think gaming has been a niche hobby for many years. Sales, especially with certain franchises, have incrementally been increasing year over year, and GTA V is certainly not the first game to break entertainment records (e.g., back in 2007, first-day sales of Halo 3 hit $170 million in the U.S., breaking all previous single-day entertainment launch records, including the previous record held by Halo 2, $125 million).

Obviously, initial response to GTA V has been great and the critics have been kind. But it’s clear from reading some online posts that “fans” want a PC port, an app beyond iOS, and better online play. Let’s wait and see if Rockstar puts its new-found riches to good use.
