Dario Argento is a horror king, and I’m loving the Hammer Films vibe he’s bringing back to the Dracula monster genre, but something just doesn’t look right in this red band trailer for Dracula 3D.
Am I talking about the giant praying mantis? Well, that’s a start. But no, as absurd as a killer giant green bug is, that’s not what I’m talking about here. It’s the CG — it looks horrible. And I’m not talking about backgrounds or CG blood, that I can deal with. Truth is, I don’t even mind the use of CG. But what’s seen in this trailer is on par with something you might see in a Syfy film.
As awkward as the wolf transformation is and as terrible as the female vampire on CG fire looks, there are a lot of elements that are working in the films favor. For one, there’s Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing and there’s spectacular gore. Oh, and lots of cleavage. Also, the performances look great from the rest of the cast: Thomas Kretschmann as Count Dracula, Asia Argento, Marta Castini, Unax Ugalde, and Miriam Giovanelli.
Dracula 3Dis now playing in select theaters, on Cable VOD, and at digital outlets.
