Something was up during the post-fight presser for UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields when the UFC decided not to award a Submission of the Night bonus, which should have been awarded to UFC welterweight Rousimar Palhares (15–5) for his win. Now the news is out and we finally know why.
Wednesday night, Palhares won the fight over Mike Pierce (17–6) by heel hook submission in the first round, however, the win became controversial after he refused to let go of the hold until one second after the referee stopped the fight. Subsequently, Palhares was officially cut in less than 24 hours after the win from the organization for repeated incidents involving unsportsmanlike conduct.
Palhares manager Alex Davis recently spoke with MMA Fighting on the matter and revealed that his Brazilian fighter is “very sad” and still confused about the situation.
He’s perplexed. He doesn’t really grasp it. He doesn’t really understand that he’s doing something overly wrong. He doesn’t get it.
First of all, we’re going to figure out what the problem is. This kid is not a mean kid. Everyone who is with him loves him to pieces. We’re going to try to figure out why this happens. Why does this kid do this [expletive]? Why doesn’t he just stop?
This isn’t a first case with Palhares, so it makes us wonder if he’s intentionally trying to hurt fighters, or maybe he just doesn’t want to take any chances.
