If I had to pick The Conjuring or Insidious as a scarier film, I’d pick The Conjuring because James Wan added a new element of surprise at the end of the film that I wasn’t expecting at all.
Although, Insidious was still scary as hell, it felt more like a modern take on Poltergeist. Nothing all that new, in my opinion. After watching The Conjuring, you wanted to recommend it to friends because the film was so good, and very well crafted from start to finish. No wonder it was a box office success, and it’s already considered one of the most successful horror movies of all time, according to Bloody Disgusting.
With that said, James Wan (Saw, Insidious) will be credited again for creating another new horror franchise with The Conjuring; word on the street is that there’s going to be a sequel, which is already in development.
In addition to a sequel, rumor is that Warner Bros. and New Line are also planning three micro-budgeted spin-offs. That’s right, three! And it sounds like the films will be based on the paranormal case files investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring. The first installment, or shall we say prequel, could be based on the story of the infamous “Annabelle Doll” that was lightly introduced at the beginning of The Conjuring. Let’s just hope this one doesn’t turn into a flop like Dead Silence, another horror film by Wan that also focused on a doll theme.
Since Wan already confirmed Fast and Furious 7, Conjuring cinematographer John R. Leonetti is rumored to helm the first spin-off, and production could start as soon as December.
