Stephen King’s CELL Moves Forward – Casting News & More

stephen king's cell

Ah, hell yeah! Years ago, when I read the book and subsequently heard that it might be made into a movie, I was ecstatic. Then the news stalled and I gradually forgot about it. Well, my friends, it gives me heaps of pleasure to report that Stephen King‘s CELL is finally moving forward with some excellent news. The film adaptation of King’s book of the same name will see John Cusack starring alongside Samuel L. Jackson, again! CELL will mark the duos second teaming in a Stephen King film, the first being 2007’s 1408 (which happens to rank in my personal top 5 list of scariest movies of all time).

Perhaps the delay has been worth the wait because my inferred social commentary of King’s book seems to have multiplied exponentially since its publication in 2006. The message being that cell phones make us all a little bit zombie-ish. And that is the starting point of this story: “When a strange signal pulsates through all cell phone networks worldwide, it starts a murderous epidemic of epic proportions when users become bloodthirsty creatures, and a group of people in New England are among the survivors to deal with the ensuing chaos after.”

Cusack will play the lead character, Clay Riddell, who is struggling to reach his son in New England. Jackson will play Tom McCourt, an ex-soldier and engineer who escapes Boston with Riddell.

King co-wrote the screenplay with Adam Alleca (Last House On The Left) and Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) is on board to direct. Benaroya Pictures will finance the picture, which is expected to start production early next year, possibly January.
