Tokyo Gore Police (2008) – Gore, Gore, And More Gore!

Tokyo Gore Police Review:

Tokyo Gore Police is Yoshihiro Nishimura’s best-known film and one of the recent classics in Japanese gore cinema. Alongside Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (a collaboration with Naoyuki Tomomatsu) and Mutant Girls Squad, Nishimura has successfully moved up from a special makeup effects expert to a very successful director.

The film itself takes place in a future Tokyo, where the city’s police department is privatized (hints of a RoboCop theme here). One standout officer named Ruka (Eihi Shiina) has been trained and assigned to hunt down genetically engineered criminals, called engineers, (hints of Blade Runner here) by her chief of police and surrogate father (played by Yukihide Benny).

Ruka became a cop because of the tragic death of her father. He was also a Tokyo police officer and leader of a group who opposed the privatization of the department. When he was assassinated at a rally in front of her, she attached herself the the police chief and trained to be the city’s greatest cop.

Ruka dedicates her life to hunting down and eliminating engineers. Until she meets up with the mastermind behind the super criminals who tells her a story that sheds light on her father’s death. She finds out that the chief was behind the assassination of her father, and that the mastermind’s father is the chief. After dispatching the son of her father’s murderer, she sets her sights on the chief.

It seems the chief didn’t like Ruka’s father holding up the privatization of the police force so he decided to rid himself of the nuisance. The chief has delusions of grandeur that include taking over Japan and making it a police state.

Ruka confronts the chief and his bodyguard (a female prisoner who has swords replacing her arms and legs). After knocking the bodyguard unconscious, Ruka avenges her father’s death by disposing of the chief in a very unpleasant manner.

Tokyo Gore Police has gore in it’s title for a reason: There’s plenty of it. It isn’t as much fun as Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, but it’s still a credible film by one of Japan’s great gore gurus.
