Earlier we reported that Rashad Evans was forced to pull out of UFC 170 against Daniel Cormier (13–0) due to a knee injury he suffered during training. We may have jumped the gun in assuming that the co-main event was canned altogether. Fortunately, it’s no longer the case now that newcomer Patrick Cummins (4-0) will officially replace Evans and face Cormier inside the Octagon in a light heavyweight bout.
Even the most hardcore MMA fan will most likely be unfamiliar with Cummins because he only had four pro fights, including one in STRIKEFORCE against Terrell Brown, but it sounds like he is ready for the fight of his life in less than two weeks from today.
According to UFC President Dana White, Cummins made Cormier cry and broke him every time in training:
I heard about this kid Patrick Cummins before. The thing that’s interesting about this kid is that he was the training partner of Daniel Cormier and claims that he made Cormier cry when they would train together. Not only did he say that, he said he broke him every time, and he said he would break him again next Saturday.
Apparently, Cummins was fired from his day job at a coffee shop when he took the call with White, who offered him the fight. As of now, Cormier vs. Cummins is definitely on and you can catch it on pay-per-view on February 22, 2014, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vega, Nevada.
