Booyah! NBC has green lit the pilot episode for a potentially great new TV series based on the ongoing DC comic book series, Constantine. We now have unofficial word on who will play the titular character: According to Deadline, actor and producer Matt Ryan (Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag) is rumored to play occult detective John Constantine in the pilot. Director Neil Marshal (The Descent) will helm the episode.
Here are the first plot details:
John Constantine is described as a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.
Until 2013, the series was called Hellblazer after Vertigo Comics replaced it with the name of the lead character, who was first introduced by creator Alan Moore in his 1980s run on Swamp Thing. A live-action film was also released in 2005 entitled Constantine, in which the lead character was played by Keanu Reeves.
