Being As An Ocean Gets You With A Catchy Song Title

Being As An Ocean is set to release their sophomore album, How We Both Wondrously Perish, on May 6th, via InVogue Records. Leading up to that date, the melodic/post hardcore outfit has released a video for the album’s second track, “Death’s Great Black Wing Scrapes The Air.”

Being as I’d never heard of this band, I decided to check out “Death’s Great Black Wing Scrapes The Air” at the very least. What metalhead in their crazy, frantic, violent, state of mind could resist that song title? The power of a great song title. Being as honest as I can, upon reading the band’s weak-ass name, Being As An Ocean, I wasn’t going to give them the time of day. Being that their name totally sounds like post-yuppie, anti-establishment-for-no-reason, ironically-misused-irony, self-centered-entitlement, look-at-me-I’m-androgynous-despite-my-spotty-beard, look-ma-I’m-vaping hipster bullshit. Being as that may be, the song wasn’t all that bad, by which I mean at least the clean vocals didn’t sound like some third-rate pop punk band.

Being as I don’t particularly like “Death’s Great Black Wing Scrapes The Air,” I did give a quick scan of some of the other songs on How We Both Wondrously Perish, and I’ll likely give it at least one listen through, because while it’s not a sub-genre that I’m honestly into, it doesn’t sound totally bad for people who are.

Being that I like The Replacements, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between Being as an Ocean’s video for “Death’s Great Black Wing Scrapes The Air” and The Replacements’ “Bastards of Young.” Being not for the similarities of these videos, I probably wouldn’t have written about this at all. The similarities between the two videos, however, really isn’t that profound: if not for both being shot with a camera on a tripod presumably, sitting in one position, and being in black and white. There’s a whole lot more action in “Bastards of Young.”
