Nicolas Winding Refn Producing “Maniac Cop” Remake

Maniac was brought back to life in 2012 by producer Alexandre Aja (Haute Tension) with original director William Lustig; it starred Elijah Wood as the serial killer. Now, it sounds like Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive and Bronson, also wants his hands on the Maniac franchise, and has plans to spearhead the remake of Maniac Cop alongside Lustig.

Word is that Wild Bunch is the production company, and that Ed Brubaker has already penned the fringin’ script for Maniac Cop. So, it’s fair to say that the film is moving forward right now and that NYC is going to be terrorizied again in the near future by the “Maniac Cop.” And maybe Bruce Campbell will make a cameo appearance in it, I hope.

There’s no word yet on who will be selected as the director, but expect it to be announced later this month between May 14th and 25th, at the Festival de Cannes.
