My love for Japanese horror cinema began in my freshman year of college at Appalachian State University, when my local video store, Fat Cats, began to carry Tartan Asia Extreme titles. I was introduced to films like The Vengeance Trilogy, Battle Royale, The Eye, Audition, A Tale of Two Sisters, and many others, and I became enamored with them. Seriously, fill up my bathtub with Asian horror films, light a few candles, hand me a glass of wine and shut the door. Normal human eyes can’t handle the kind of romance that’s about to go down.
Ju-on: The Beginning of the End is the seventh film in the Ju-on series, and is being directed by Masayuki Ochiai, who is best known for the 2008 remake of Shutter, based on a Thai film of the same name. The remake wasn’t very good in the least, so hopefully this will be better. The Ju-on series has always given me a kind of detached amusement. I’m not the biggest fan of ghost stories, but so far, the series has been serviceably entertaining and unfailingly weird.
Ju-on: The Beginning of the End is set to be released in Japan on June 28, 2014. A North American DVD/Blu-ray release date is sure to come soon.
