Ever since hearing that Dragonforce were going to cover the Johnny Cash classic, “Ring of Fire,” I’ve been anxious to hear it. Not because it’s Dragonforce’s first cover, but I secretly wanted them to fail. Seriously, nothing can compare to the original… Ok, well, Social Distortion did a pretty damn good job of it. Nonetheless, the day has finally come to cast judgement.
The track, from Dragonforce’s upcoming album Maximum Overload (due out August 19th), is currently streaming over at A.V. Club for your consumption. As I said, I was kind of hoping that it was going to suck, but I have to say that it’s not half bad. If I’m going to be honest with you, it’s Marc Hudson’s vocals that really save the track. See, it opens with this thrashy riff, followed by some drum/symphonic blasts, and a guitar wail that had me thinking, what the fuck is this? Then Hudson comes in and saves the day by sticking to the original vocal melody.
Some more honesty dictates that I say that this cover is a bit over the top, but it’s Dragonforce, so what else can you expect?
Have a listen and let us know what you think.
