Godhunter’s “Pursuit/Predator” Invokes The Zodiac Killer

Any band, it could be One Direction, that opens a song with a quote from the Zodiac Killer will instantly grab our attention. So let’s get that quote out of the way right now:

I like killing people because it is so much fun. It’s more fun than hunting wild game in the forest because man is the most dangerous animal of all. To kill something gives the most thrilling experience, it’s even better than getting your rocks off with a girl. I won’t give you my name because you’ll try to stop me.

That quote layered with the insanity-inducing buzz at the top of Godhunter’s new track “Pursuit/Predator” sets the tone for where this song is going, and it’s signalling that a storm is coming. But, as a whole, the track is not as foreboding as one might expect. Yes, it’s dark, gloomy, and most definitely sludgy, but it is also very accessible. In the seven-minute track, the drums are perfectly controlled in the slowed tempo of the song, offering just the right amount of fill work. The fuzzed out guitars and the riffs on display are tight and smooth, never becoming annoying or too genre specific. The bass guitar provides the quiet backbone, keeping everyone in check. And the vocals, oh my god the vocals, are again controlled; they’re simultaneously rough and clean, but tough as hell.

Back to the accessibility point; if you’re wanting to introduce a metal comrade to sludge, this might be the track to get them hooked.
