Both Luke Rockhold and Ronald Souza had amazing performances at UFC on FOX 15 last week, but it looks like the former STRIKEFORCE champion is being favored by UFC President Dana White for a shot at middleweight gold. If you remember, Rockhold faced Lyoto Machida and dominated “The Dragon,” eventually submitting Machida by rear-naked choke at 2:31 in round 2.
Although, Souza also finished Chris Camozzi early in the first round at UFC on FOX 15, White is definitely leaning toward Rockhold, which he feels makes more sense considering the fact that Machida was the former UFC light heavyweight champion and was a much more worthy contender than Camozzi.
Probably. It makes sense that he would be next, yes, that he would be next, who knows how all this stuff is gonna play out.
According to White, things aren’t officially set in stone yet because he feels it’s too early to talk about the next contender before the champion is crowned at UFC 187:
Even talking about it doesn’t make sense because, first of all, Chris still has to fight Vitor, and whoever wins has to come out uninjured, which hasn’t been easy to do lately, and then we have to make sure Luke stays healthy. We’ll see what happens with Weidman and Vitor and we will go from there.
The co-main event of UFC 187 features a 5-round middleweight championship bout between current champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort. The winner will most likely face Rockhold in the not too distant future.
