When a horror film gets picked up before it screens at Cannes that’s basically a good sign. Especially for a foreign film since it will a get wider theatrical release. So I’d say Mexican director Emiliano Rocha Minter is a very happy camper because his upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film We Are the Flesh (Tenemos la carne (original title)) has been acquired for U.S. distribution days before it’s screening at Cannes’ Blood Window on Monday.
Variety is one of the early birds to report the news and also mentioned the film is “one of the most talked-about of Mexican feature debuts in recent years.”
‘We Are the Flesh’ is set in a post-apocalypse Mexico, where a brother and sister, Lucio and Fauna, wander a ruined city for years in search of food and shelter. They find their way into one of its last surviving buildings, where a man makes them a dangerous offer to survive the outside world. As they help him transform the building into a womb-like cave, a disquieting sexual relationship emerges, along with a dynamic in which darker instincts do their destructive work.
UK-based Arrow Films plans to first launch its own theatrical distribution operation stateside of the film before showing it to U.S. audiences. We Are the Flesh stars María Evoli, Diego Gamaliel, and Noé Hernández.
