When Slayer plays, Slayer delivers and people show respect. That’s how it is on a big festival stage and, as I learned last week, that’s how it is in a smaller venue, which is what I was looking forward to. See, since first seeing Slayer at Ozzfest back in 1998, I’ve only ever seen the thrash metal giants on the big stage and I really wanted to see how they were in a more intimate environment.

I was not disappointed.

The fans, who all night dominated the scene in their Slayer shirts for openers Death Angel and Anthrax, packed it in tight, and the humidity in the venue was tropical, to say the least. The body odor was as intense as it would be in a 10×10 room packed with 30 comicconers just after getting their picture taken with Carrie Fisher.

Pit, sweat, maybe a little blood, Slayer played 20 songs that spanned their formidable career, and all of it was incredible. Of course, Season in the Abyss being my favorite album, I was thrilled to hear the album’s highlights played, despite having seen Slayer play the album in its entirety.

I can tell you until I’m blue in the face how awesome it was to see Slayer on this tour, but I’ll just leave you with this piece of advice: Get out there and fucking Slayer live!
