Conor McGregor made history on Saturday night at UFC 205. The Irish sensation defeated Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight belt, which makes him the first ever in the UFC to win two belts in two different divisions. It now appears like he could be gunning for a third.
During some moments at the ceremonial weigh-ins for UFC 205, McGregor wasn’t too thrilled to see Tyron Woodley in his sight. Something Woodley did earlier that day triggered a spark in McGregor, to the point he made a bit of noise. Enough to make you think that McGregor could be eyeing now a UFC welterweight belt in the not too distant future.
In the UFC 205 post-fight press conference, Woodley appears to be open to a fight with the two division champion.
Well unlike the last fight when I won the belt and I got 20 seconds to think about it and everybody wanted to see who I’m fighting immediately next, I think I deserve – many of you guys didn’t pick me to win this fight, many of the crowd was against me. So I’m gonna talk to my management team and we’re gonna see what’s next for me. I don’t know if Mr. McGregor wants to go for a third belt. It looked like he was talking a little noise in the back so we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.
If he wants the fight, we can sign it right now. I’m good on the fight. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for him to fight me.
Woodley made his first title defense against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205. He won the fight in a majority draw with two judges scoring the fight 47-47 and the third 48-47 in favor of Woodley. However, there was some confusion as the result was initially announced as a split decision victory for Woodley only to be corrected moments later when the decision of a majority draw was announced.
What’s next? A rematch with Thompson is being talked about or a match up with Demian Maia, who has been promised title shots.
