This is an odd track. “20 Below” from September Mourning’s debut full-length, Volume II, blends Goth rock/metal with a sound that is totally accessible. That’s a great thing when bands can mix things up like this, but in September Mourning’s case, their look and any fringe elements of their sound, everything that makes them “unique,” probably isn’t going to be what keeps them off of Active Rock Radio — no, it’ll likely be the exact accessibility of them and the perceived notion that they’ve somehow have tailored their sound for sales.
Now, I don’t know if “20 Below” is getting play on the radio, I don’t really listen to modern radio, and I don’t know if September Mourning have tailored their sound, but what I do know is that they sound pretty damn good. More than just Goth or mainstream, the band also manages to pay homage to a more classic ballad sound. If there is one thing that this band has done, they’ve cast a wide net.
That net also includes the horror/comic book theme and visuals contained in the video for “20 Below.” Check it out on this page and let us know what you think.
“20 Below” follows the continuing story of human-reaper hybrid ‘September’ through parallel story lines as she is pursued between two worlds. September Mourning commented about the track:
’20 Below’ is about ending the cycle of abuse within our own lives, whether it’s self-inflicted or from an outside source. We’ve all had those relationships where someone has gotten close to us, abused us in some way… knocks us down so hard it diminishes our self-esteem. ‘20 Below’ is about the realization that the beatdown feeling and feelings of worthlessness are untrue and being caused by some external negativity. It’s about being strong enough within your own self to rise above. There are no saviors or Messiahs coming to save us. There’s only the strength in our hearts and our souls, which is greater than we can even conceive. It’s great enough to be the catalyst to save our own selves if we find a way to tap into that part of ourselves.
Volume II is out now via Sumerian Records.
September Mourning is also gearing up to join Dope and Combichrist as direct support on their Blood Lust Death Tour with Davey Suicide opening.
