Besides a new Godzilla sequel slated for 2019 from Michael Dougherty, Netflix and Toho are teaming up for the first-ever high quality animation of the iconic monster franchise.
To bring the original Japanese animation to life, Toho will work exclusively with leading studio Polygon Pictures alongside directors Kobun Shizuno (Knights of Sidonia, Detective Conan) and Hiroyuki Seshita (AJIN: Demi-Human, BLAME!). The screenplay will be penned from acclaimed anime writer Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Madoka Magika).
Director Seshita said,
I’m thrilled to collaborate with two very talented colleagues, Mr. Gen Urobuchi and Director Kobun Shizuno to bring to life a unique vision of a universal human drama set in an epic world.
Meanwhile, screenplay writer Urobuchi added,
I am very honored to join this Godzilla project as one of its Japanese creators. I’m grateful for all the support and really excited to bringing this content to fans worldwide.
Godzilla is set to be the latest addition to the growing slate of Netflix original anime content exclusively available to audiences around the world. The animation will premiere on Netflix in over 190 countries following a Toho theatrical release in Japan.
