One of John Carpenter’s cult favorites is currently in discussion to be remade. Back in 2015, 20th Century Fox picked up the rights to reboot Escape from New York, but since then there hasn’t been much movement on the project.
Now things might start taking shape a bit more as the studio is eyeing a high-profile director to helm the reboot. According to THR, Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn) is in discussion with FOX for the reboot with Carpenter attached as the executive producer. Apparently, he would have creative input on the project, just in case it starts to drift away too much from the original vision.
The Escape from New York reboot will also be produced by Picture Co.’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman. Word on the street is FOX would like to reboot Carpenter’s sci-fi franchise in similar fashion as the recent Planet of the Apes films.
If Rodriguez agrees to direct, he would be helming from a screenplay by Neil Cross (Luther), with production being eyed to begin in 2017.
