Now that the Mayweather vs. McGregor chapter is officially closed, MMA fighters in the UFC are looking to lure the Irish sensation back into a fight for a shot to earn a massive purse.
Over the past week, multiple UFC and boxing opportunities opened up for McGregor, whose stock increased after his crossover boxing fight with Mayweather, regardless of the result. The two-division UFC champion lost via TKO, shocking the MMA world for enduring 10-rounds with one of the greatest in boxing.
At the moment, there’s word on the street that McGregor’s next match is a trilogy with Nate Diaz inside the Octagon. Apparently, Diaz’s boxing coach Richard Perez is seeking at least a $20 million or $30 million fight purse. An ambitious amount the UFC has yet to pay out. Besides Diaz, there’s also hints at Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Kevin Lee. But now a new name is coming out for the money bag.
Justin Gaethje, UFC’s latest prospect in the lightweight division has made a buzz for himself after his successful debut against Michael Johnson. The violent brawler is now hoping to get McGregor’s attention too. During a media lunch in Century City on Wednesday, Gaethje expressed interest in a fight with “Mystic Mac.”
Gaethje said,
McGregor, when he comes back, he’s gonna pick whoever he wants. As the competitor that I see him being, he’s gonna want the most dangerous guy. When I finish Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s gonna be me.
On paper and on TV, I’m the most dangerous, violent guy in this division. Most hittable guy. So that’s probably someone he’d want to fight. As long as I knock out Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s my goal — to get that fight.
Will McGregor bite? I guess we’ll see after Gaethje’s next match. The former WSOF Lightweight Champion is now coaching opposite of Eddie Alvarez on the newest season of The Ultimate Fighter, which premieres on Wednesday.
