On July 13th, Deafheaven will release their highly anticipated fourth album, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. The band’s second full-length for Anti-, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love follows 2015’s critically acclaimed New Bermuda.
The album’s lead single, “Honeycomb,” is an 11-plus minute masterpiece that seamlessly blends black metal with punk and grunge, to my ears at least. The atmosphere that’s created for the greater part of the song is one of hopefulness at the end of a long tunnel of melancholy, all the while delivering a sense of building toward a dramatic climax. And Trevor Deschryver on drums is just incredible to listen to. True, the guitars and bass offer amazing melodies and tones, but the drums seem to drive this song forward, which is an unusual role for a drummer to play.
“Honeycomb lyrically references Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar (author of the stream-of-consciousness novel Hopscotch), and the song is accompanied by a video that shows glimpses of Deafheaven in the studio and captures their wanderings around San Francisco. Have a watch and listen on this page.
Working again with producer Jack Shirley, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love takes its title from Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair, reflecting a theme of hazy, yearning romanticism threaded throughout the album.
