The 22nd annual Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off in Montreal in less than a week, which means movie goers still have time to pick up tickets since I’m sure there’s still tons left. But don’t expect to get your hands-on openers and even closers because those usually sell out extremely fast.
As most of you probably already know by now the festival will feature over 130 movies, which includes the world premiere of the horror anthology Nightmare Cinema, screenings of Unfriended: Dark Web and David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake, and a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to filmmaker Joe Dante, just to name a few small surprises.
In addition to these guaranteed crowd pleasers, the most anticipated Japanese film of 2018 will have its International Premiere at Fantasia 2018 on July 23rd and completely blow everyone’s minds! Adapted from one of the world’s most popular mangas, Bleach is directed by Shinsuke Sato and masterfully portrays the epic fight between Shinigamis and monstrous lost souls called Hollows.
Lastly, Panos Cosmatos long-awaited Canadian premiere of Mandy has been selected as the festival’s closing film. Starring an especially strong Nicolas Cage in a performance that seethes with internalized rage, Mandy also features a shredding experimental electronic score from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson that works hypnotically with the film’s pacing and imagery to create a dreamy mood of near-death intoxication.
Fantasia 2018 takes place from July 12-August 1, with its Frontières International Co-Production Market and Industry Rendez-Vous Weekend being held July 19-22.
Make sure to book your tickets as soon as you can!
