What happen to you Resident Evil? I remember playing the first couple games and being genuinely terrified. To me, they invented the survival horror genre. I miss creeping through a scary mansion, and not really knowing what’s around the next corner. I long for the feeling of dread that comes with knowing that you only have two bullets in your gun clip, hoping that the next room has ammo, and not zombies. Now you’ve become a pretty generic action games. Yes, anything with zombies is now as dull and lifeless as the monsters themselves. So how do you revitalize a franchise that has lost its way? According to Capcom, it’s by going completely in the other direction. This Fall, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, an online squad based third person shooter, is set to compete with the Call of Duty, and Gears of War’s of the world.
From early reports, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is an online only, squad based shooter set during the events of the Resident Evil 2, and 3. Sounds interesting, but your only single player option is to play with computer controlled bots. Split screen multiplayer is a must to make this game remotely viable. They’ve done it before in Resident Evil 5. So it’s not out of the realm of possibilities. There also needs to be an actually story, not just going from point A to point B, or capturing their version of a flag.
There will always be a soft spot for Resident Evil in my heart. And I will always give them the benefit of the doubt. Now I feel like an old fart, talking about how in my day, games used to be good.
