This Week In Gaming News – Resident Evil 6, UFC Undisputed 3, Max Payne 3 & More

The Darkness II

Supernatural gangster Jackie Estacado is back in The Darkness II. You can download a demo right now if you’re an Xbox Live Gold subscriber. The rest of us on PlayStation 3 and PC can get it on January 24th.

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir

For fans of the scary Fatal Frame series, the picture-taking horror genre is coming to the 3DS. Nintendo will release the augmented reality 3-D game, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir for the Nintendo 3DS. Augmented reality is as much of a gimmick as 3-D, but if you do it in a dark room, and pump out some spooky sounds, you just might have something frightening enough to drop your handheld.

The objective of the game is to help a young girl break a curse that a witch put on her. The story will take you through a 16-page diary-style book called the Diary of Faces. Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir will be out on Friday, April 13, 2012. Yes, that Friday the 13th; well played Nintendo.

Starhawk

Sony announced that Starhawk, the follow-up to the multiplayer combat game Warhawk, will be released on May 8th. If large-scale multiplayer in space is your thing, the public beta has already begun. Get in there while it’s hot.

Gears of War 3: Fenix Rising

The latest Gears of War 3 DLC came out this week. This might be the only one worth getting, because it adds a new experience system. It allows those who have maxed out their level to “Prestige,” like in that other popular online shooter. The Fenix Rising add-on Map Pack is out now for 800 Microsoft Points. You get five mew maps, four character skins, and a reason to level up all over again.

Street Fighter X Tekken

Another year, another Capcom fighting game. Honestly, I’m getting pretty burned out on the whole fighting genre again. But for those who haven’t, they’ve showed off six new character in Street Fighter X Tekken, and a couple on the Vita version as well. On the Street Fighter side you get Balrog, Vega, and, Street Fighter 4 newcomer, Juri. For you Tekken aficionados, you can tell me who Paul, Law, and Xiaoyu are.

If for some ill-conceived reason you’re getting the PlayStation Vita version of this game, Capcom has teased two exclusive characters to the system. One is Pac-Man. The Pac-Man with arms and legs, not just a head. The other one is hard to tell. It sort of looks like Megaman if you squint really hard. We’ll find out the final roster in the next month, because the game should be out sometime in March.

Star Trek Online

The massively multiplayer online game Star Trek Online became Free-to-Play. The game will be separated into two tiers of service, Gold and Silver. If you are willing to spend a little money for a Gold membership, you can get things like extra character and bank slots. But to be honest, I don’t think it’s necessary. Silver is all you need to start shooting phasers. If you’re curious, download the game, and live long and prosper.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

A 45-minute demo of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is available for download on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC. As far as I can tell, Reckoning looks like a cross between Elder Scrolls and Fable. If that’s not enough reason to give it a try, you also get an exclusive Mass Effect 3 item when you complete the demo. More demos should give out free stuff for other games.

Resident Evil: Revelations

Resident Evil: Revelations became the first downloadable demo on the 3DS. Nintendo announced a while back that demos will be coming soon, and that day has come. Demos for Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure will pop up on the eShop eventually as well.

They are handling demos differently on the handheld. It looks like you’ll only be able to play each demo for a limited number of times. For example, the Resident Evil: Revelations demo has a counter showing 30 remaining uses. Well mine says 29 now. There’s no word on whether or not this will be a standard number of plays. But there’s nothing wrong with companies letting you try a game before you buy it.

Shank 2

Shank 2 now has a release date. The -2D comic-book style beat-em up sequel will be available on February 7th, on the PlayStation Network and PC, and the Xbox Live Arcade version will be out on February 8th.

UFC Undisputed 3

The release date for UFC Undisputed 3 was pushed back to February 14th. But on the bright side, a demo will be available next week on January 24th.
