Ben Askren Temporarily Signs Up With AGON Wrestling Championships

Ben Askren

You can hate former Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren (12-0) because he is a schmuck sometimes, and his last few title defending fights in Bellator was as entertaining as a cockfight, if not worse.

But the fact is that Askren doesn’t sucks by any means, he was a great wrestler who couldn’t be dethroned by anyone in Bellator. It’s completely the fault of Bellator President Bjorn Rebney and his organization since they can’t find anyone remotely as good on the ground. The UFC currently holds the right caliber of fighters to give him a challenge, however, Askren as a free agent hasn’t signed a deal with them yet. I believe it’s just a matter of time before they officially do, but for the time being Askren is temporarily moving back to his roots as a wrestler.

Askren, also a former 2008 Olympian, will be helping out and serving as the main event in the first show for AGON Wrestling Championships to be held in Las Vegas on October 27, 2013, according to Bleacher Report. A representative of AGON confirmed last Thursday, and Askren announced via Twitter.

This should give Askren enough time to feel out the market and see where his next MMA fight will take place. I’m just hope he doesn’t get too comfortable wrestling because I’d love to watch a match up between him and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre someday.
