It was an epic night for Tyron Woodley on Saturday at UFC 201. The underdog dethroned Robbie Lawler early in the main event of the fight card. Many didn’t expect Woodley to win the fight via knockout halfway through the first round to claim the UFC Welterweight Championship from the former kingpin, but he did in ultimate fashion.
Following Woodley’s big win, it appears like he caught the attention of former UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, who has been contemplating a return in the UFC over the past few months. In fact, GSP was immediately contacted by MMAFighting.com on Sunday about a potential match up with Woodley in the near future, and answered “yes” via a text message.
During the UFC 201 post-fight press conference, Woodley also expressed his interest in fighting GSP or Nick Diaz in his first title defense.
Nick Diaz is a top-five welterweight of all time in my eyes, Georges St-Pierre is the No. 1 welterweight in my eyes. If I’m an athlete in this sport, in this division and I want to say I’m the best in the world, I feel like I should compete against those guys. So I don’t feel any obligation to go by the rankings. We all know how those rankings are produced anyway. And I want to go out there and I want to fight the money fights.
At the moment, Stephen Thompson is the unanimous No. 1 contender in the 170-pound division, but Woodley isn’t interested in facing “Wonderboy” at an upcoming UFC event.
