UFC 229 is officially in the books, but the aftermath will most likely live on. Following Khabib Nurmagomedov dominant win over Conor McGregor, the Dagestani mixed martial artist took matters outside the cage.
Moments after the match ended, Nurmagomedov jumped the cage and attacked McGregor’s longtime teammate Dillon Danis. Then a brawl broke out between both teams, which President Dana White claims was the craziest moment in his career. The animosity was carried over to fans in Las Vegas on Saturday night as well, a fight or two was captured on cell phones.
Despite being victorious at UFC 229, Nurmagomedov paycheck is being held until a full investigation is conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commision. Lastly, his title could be stripped, according to White.
No, it’s not 100 percent. The thing is, we’re regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, or whatever state we’re in, right? The Nevada State Athletic Commission is going to go after him, I’m sure pretty hard. He doesn’t have to worry about me right now, he has to worry about Nevada.
During the UFC 229 post-fight presser, Nurmagomedov apologized.
I want to say sorry to the athletic commission. Sorry to Vegas. I know this is not my best side. This is not my best side. I am a human being.
I want to say something, you know, people little bit, not people, I think it is media, media change MMA. This is respect sport. This is not trash-talking sport. This is respect. I told you before, guys, I want to change this game. I don’t want people talk shit about, like, opponents, talk shit about his father, religion. You cannot talk about religion, you cannot talk about nation, guys, you cannot talk about this stuff. For me, this is very important.
