In a week from now Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov are expected to square at UFC 223. When I say “expected” I mean that Nurmagomedov may encounter weight cut issues again, but hopefully that won’t be another fact this time.
Besides heated conversations during a media call earlier this week, Ferguson sat down on Thursday to address other things, such as a superfight with Conor McGregor and an interest to fight Georges St-Pierre. If the Irishman continues to hold off on his return, Ferguson said there’s another “money fight” that catches his eye: A bout with GSP.
He said Thursday,
I mean, GSP, literally if he wants a money fight, he’s an athlete. We all have to pay our bills. We all have to pay our taxes. Straight up. That’s what I signed up for in the beginning,” Ferguson said. “I was 170 pounds; 155 was forced on me. I mean, that forced the move, ultimate reality, then that’s not the end result; 170 pounds, where I had 12 fights.
A dream fight for Ferguson may be a fight away, but he won’t let that distract from his tasks at hand as a champion.
When you’re just going for money fights, when this thing (the UFC title) starts losing luster … it becomes tarnished.
UFC 223: Ferguson vs. Khabib will be held on April 7, 2018, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The co-main event features a rematch between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jędrzejczyk.
